Types of Disabled Home Adaptations
Types of Adaptation
When you decide that you wish to adapt your property and that you are going to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant, here is some useful information to assist you into starting the project. Click on the different questions to find out more.
Bathroom FacilitiesWould you like to have a shower whenever you want? You can adapt your bathroom by installing a level access shower tray. A level access shower tray will enable you to shower with greater levels of independence and dignity - whenever you want. The correct type of shower tray will also give your new shower-room a much more spacious feel. Work to convert your bathroom into a shower-room should only take 3-4 days. Adaptations to your bathroom can also include more suitable sanitary facilities which can provide you with a greater degree of privacy at home.
Kitchen FacilitiesDo you want to move about your kitchen more freely or make your kitchen units easier to reach? You can make adaptations to improve your kitchen layout to give you the independence you want. Grant adaptations can also include creating more space in your kitchen with a design to meet your lifestyle and layout of your home.
StairsIs using the stairs is no longer as easy? Why not adapt to make facilities available on the ground floor? This can include the provision of ground floor facilities including toilet facilities, wet rooms and bedrooms. The new room can usually be located to best meet the way you want to live and use your home. Facilities will be designed to be wheelchair or walking aid friendly.
Accessing Your HomeWhy not enter or leave your home when you want? Work to provide safe access to and from your home can include providing level access to your home with ramps or shallow steps. Ramp and steps can often be situated where you would like to have them.
Moving around Your HomeDo you use a wheelchair or walking aid in the home? Adaptations can be offered to make moving around the home much easier and safer. These can include widening of doors or creating extra space to allow for wheelchair turning circles within a room.
If you have a disability or mobility issue which impacts on your use of the home and feel that you require adaptations to your home you can start the process of applying for a disabled facilities grant by contacting your local Health & Social Services Trust, your GP or Social Worker.
The Northern Ireland Housing Executive will not accept an application for a Disabled Facilities Grant without an Occupational Therapists recommendation
