Sliabh Dubh Manor Community Garden Project Takes Root

11 November 2016

Fold Housing Association and Upper Springfield Youth Team hosted a garden planting session with local primary and aged children at Sliabh Dubh Manor to promote positive living and community spirit.

Fiona McAuley, Community Empowerment Officer, said “This is a great initiative for the young children of the area to get together and make a visible impact in the community for everyone to see and take pleasure. The children enjoyed learning how to plant and feed the different plants, how to maintain the garden and getting top gardening tips from expert, Michael McCorry from Belfast City Council’s Parks & Leisure Department.

She added, “The raised flowerbeds that the children planted as part of this programme mark the first phase of our Community Garden initiative. We hope to have a poly tunnel erected early in the New Year which will benefit the residents of the Manor and the Sliabh Dubh Community.

Sliabh Dubh Manor is also hosting a ‘Safe Space’ programme in conjunction the Community Garden programme which will involve ‘chill out’ zones, pool table and many other activities which will be open to primary and secondary school children.
