Hate Crime: Useful Information

29 August 2014

Helm Housing Association is very concerned by the recent incidents of Hate Crime in our communities.

Hate crimes are any crimes that are targeted at a person because of hostility or prejudice towards that personâ??s:

  • disability
  • race or ethnicity
  • religion or belief
  • sexual orientation
  • transgender identity

This can be committed against a person or property.

A victim does not have to be a member of the group at which the hostility is targeted. In fact, anyone could be a victim of a hate crime.

Why should I report hate crime?

Hate crimes and incidents hurt; they can be confusing and frightening.

By reporting them when they happen to you, you may be able to prevent these incidents from happening to someone else.  You will also help the police and Helm to understand the extent of hate crime in your local area so that we can better respond to it.

Reporting makes a difference - to you, your friends, and your life.

Support for victims of this crime can be provided in a number of ways. At Helm Housing we work closely with the police and local community groups to tackle these crimes.

Base 2 is a crisis intervention project, which offers clarification, support and mediation services to individuals and families at risk of violence or exclusion from their community. The project works directly with people to support them to deal with conflict or difficulties they are experiencing within their local community. The project offers a verification and mediation service to assist individuals to remain within their homes or give practical support to safely relocate out of the area.

At Helm Housing we are working in partnership with Base 2 (NIACRO Belfast) and we can make a referral for support for any resident who has been affected by these crimes.
