Community Spirit in Full Bloom at Fruithill Fold

01 May 2025

A once-unused outdoor space at Fruithill Fold in Belfast has been transformed into a vibrant serenity garden and allotment, thanks to the dedication of local tenants determined to reconnect their community after the isolation of the pandemic.

Led by Chairperson Martha Clarke, the Tenants Association spent the past year bringing their vision to life-creating a peaceful, inclusive space that supports mental wellbeing, encourages social interaction, and offers opportunities to learn new skills.

The project was made possible through a £7,320 National Lottery grant, secured with the support of housing staff, Tenant Engagement, and finance teams. Tenants were fully involved in shaping the design to ensure the space reflected their needs and aspirations.

Two local community partners, Men’s Shed ‘Half Moon Lake’ and The Three Sisters Gardening Community provided vital hands-on support and guidance throughout the build, helping tenants turn plans into reality.

Also a special thank you to the dedicated individuals whose hard work and passion helped bring this project to life: Brendan Seenan, Jackie Burns, Jim McDonald, Jim McGlinchey, Gemma McEntegart, Paul Tabb, and Frances Kelly. Your efforts have made this garden a true community achievement!

The garden’s success is the result of a collective effort from tenants, staff, family members, and support from the Tenants Association of St Paul’s Fold, all of whom contributed their time, skills, and encouragement.

Now complete, the serenity garden and allotment are set to become a central hub at Fruithill Fold, bringing residents together through events, shared activities, and the potential to achieve local gardening awards that celebrate the community’s hard work.
