Belfast joined the UK-wide celebration of Refugee Week 2025 under the inspiring theme “Community as a Superpower.” This weeklong programme demonstrated the resilience, creativity, and valuable contributions of refugees and people seeking sanctuary in Belfast and beyond. The series of events ran from June 16th until June 22nd, 2025.
Organised by Belfast City of Sanctuary, Refugee Week featured events across the city supported by housing associations taking part in the Housing for All programme, including Radius Housing, Apex, Ark, Clanmil, and Woven.
As part of the celebrations, Radius Housing, in partnership with the Markets Development Association (MDA), hosted a community event in South Belfast. This vibrant gathering included live music, drumming, cultural storytelling, a children’s activity area, and refreshments, creating a welcoming space for connection and cultural exchange.
The event also served as an opportunity to highlight Radius Housing’s new Gasworks shared housing development and its ongoing partnership work with the local Advisory Group stakeholders. Staff and volunteers from both Radius Housing and MDA were present to engage with residents and visitors.
Refugee Week is a chance for everyone to come together and celebrate what makes Belfast a welcoming and inclusive city for all.
Israel Eguaogie, Belfast City of Sanctuary:
"Community is our superpower—Refugee Week reminds us that when we come together, we rise together. Celebrating our shared humanity builds bridges, breaks barriers, and transforms lives. This week, let’s honour the strength in unity and the beauty in diversity.
Together, we celebrate and embrace Diversity in Belfast."
Ciarán Hargey, Education & Work, Market Development Association:
‘The community of Inner South Belfast welcomes this event and decided to show our support because it encourages us to think about how we treat people who come to work & raise families in our city. We want to use the Gasworks shared space as it provides open & easy access to all citizens of Belfast.”
Refugee Week 2025 is supported by the Department for Communities and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive’s ‘Housing for All’ Shared Housing Programme.
