Helm step up work at Sloan Street with Connolly & Fee

Helm Housing Association have appointed Connolly & Fee as the contractor for their new £2.8 million development at Sloan Street, Dungannon. The Coalisland-based contractor recently began work on the scheme which is due for completion in December 2016. When finished, the development will provide 21 two-bedroom general needs apartments and seven one-bedroom general needs apartments in the town. In total the development will provide accommodation for 77 people, including families and the elderly.
This announcement follows the ongoing roll-out of Helm Housings £2.5 million maintenance programme and the recent appointment of H&J Martin and Fusion Heating as maintenance contractors. Development of the organisations £3.7million scheme at Dundonald is ongoing, with that scheme set for completion in October this year.
Speaking following the announcement, Michael McDonnell, CEO, Helm Housing said: "We are delighted to appoint Connolly & Fee as the contractor for the Sloan Street development and see work on construction of 28 new homes begin. This is a significant investment of £2.8million by Helm Housing and the project will help play a part in easing housing stress in the Dungannon and south Tyrone areas.
Shane Connolly, Contracts Manager, Connolly & Fee, said: "We welcome the opportunity to continue our relationship with Helm Housing in the construction of the 28 new units at Sloan Street. This facility will be a positive development for the area. The innovative design, which includes underground parking, will be a welcome challenge and we look forward to delivering this project by autumn 2016.
As part of the contract, Connolly & Fee will provide employment opportunities for local people involved in the Steps to Work scheme. This will include 48 weeks of placement during the construction phase. Steps to Work is a Department for Employment & Learning programme which helps people move into and sustain employment, through work experience, training and new qualifications.
Michael continued: "As a social enterprise, Helm Housing want to ensure that our work can benefit the wider community, which is why we have ensured support for those who are seeking employment through the Steps to Work programme in this contract. These placements will help people gain new skills and find long term employment, as well as playing a part in the development of a first class housing project for the Dungannon area.
