Number of Households set to grow faster than Population

26 Mar 2015

Northern Ireland Research and Statistics Agency have revealed the number of households set to grow faster than population in Northern Ireland.

Between 2012 and 2037, the growth in the number of households (14.7%) is projected to exceed that of the population (9.9%).

The overall number of households is projected to increase from 708,600 households in 2012 to 812,700 in 2037. This increase is equivalent to an average increase of 4,200 households per annum over the 25 year period in question.

The greatest levels of growth between 2012 and 2037 can be expected in the number of households with either one adult or two adults (i.e. no children), which are projected to increase by 21.5% and 30.7% respectively. By 2037, these two household types are projected to account for three fifths (60.1%) of all households, in broadly equal proportions.

The main drivers for this growth are the population in Northern Ireland continuing to age and the tendency for the older population to live in either one or two-person households. For example, due to improvements in life expectancy, the population aged 65 and over is projected to grow by 79.3% between 2012 and 2037.

In contrast, the overall number of households with children is projected to decrease by 4.2% between 2012 (212,900 households) and 2037 (204,000 households), although an increase of 9,500 households of this type is projected during the first decade of this period.

Across Northern Ireland, while the number of households is projected to increase in each of the 11 new Local Government Districts between 2012 and 2037, the level of growth is projected to range from 7.7% in Mid & East Antrim to 26.8% in Mid Ulster.

Armagh, Banbridge & Craigavon Local Government District is projected to experience the greatest growth in terms of the number of households (i.e. 19,600 households), accounting for 18.8% of the total growth across Northern Ireland during the period 2012-2037.

Fold, through it on site construction programme of over 500 new homes, is committed to developing high quality affordable homes to meet the increasing demand for homes across Northern Ireland.
