Radius Housing has supported the NI Women’s U19 Football Team who competed in Portugal for a mini European qualifying competition.
Winston Kerr, Housing Advisor from Radius Staying Put team and also part of the NI backroom staff during a recent competition presented £500 on behalf of Radius to goalkeeper, Caoimhe Callaghan.
He said, “We are delighted to support the team with this donation towards their trip to Portugal. Football is one of the most popular sports and it is brilliant that our women’s teams are getting the recognition they deserve as the profile of the sport has been raised to new height this past year.” The NI women competed in the UEFA Women''s Under-19 Championship Finals, which was held in Northern Ireland during the summer. They then headed to Portugal where they faced the host team plus Norway and Cyprus. A 2 – 0 defeat against hosts Portugal and a 7 – 0 defeat against top seeds Norway in the first 2 games made it virtually impossible to qualify to the Elite Stages of the competition. The final game against Cyprus, was held at the Municipal Stadium in Nelas. Having fallen behind midway through the first half of the game, they showed great character when they equalized early in the second half. The young NI women claimed all three points with a winning goal later into the second half. The team has gained much more experience in international football which will put them in good stead for the future.
The forthcoming Seven Nations will advance them from the elite round to the finals in Switzerland along with the host nation.
