Rathain Fold Helping New Cancer Service on North Coast

Leading local cancer charity Action Cancer is bringing its therapeutic support services to the North Coast thanks to funding from The Honourable The Irish Society and Children in Need. 

Due to a new partnership with Fold Housing Association''s Rathain Fold in Coleraine and Portrush Medical Centre, the charity now operates out of two bases in the North Coast. Action Cancer seeks to support local people who have been diagnosed with cancer as well as their family members, friends and carers.

Services available include counselling & complementary therapy for adults, young people and children aged 5 and up. Also on offer is a two-day Positive Living Programme for adults offering life coaching, counselling and complementary therapy helping people to reflect, refocus and rebuild following a cancer diagnosis. All services are free of charge.

Coleraine man Ian Harbinson who has pancreatic cancer shares his story; ''I received personal support from the Action Cancer staff in Londonderry and found it very helpful in coming to terms with my cancer diagnosis and helped prepare me for surgery and following treatment. I am delighted that Action Cancer services are now available in the North Coast area and I will be using the services provided. I encourage anyone at any stage of their cancer journey to avail of the services and I highly recommend them.''

Yvonne Thompson, Coordinator, Rathain Fold, said, ''We are pleased to be able to offer our facilities to support people affected by cancer in Coleraine and the surrounding area. Rathain Fold is home to some 63 tenants so it has a relaxed homely environment; we offer a warm and supportive welcome for people coming to avail of the therapeutic services.''

Allen Brown, Practice Manager of Portrush Medical Centre added, ''All the GPs and staff in the practice are committed to raising awareness of these services amongst our local community.
