Toberdoney Fold Celebrates 25 Years

Toberdoney Fold celebrated its 25th anniversary on Thursday 9 July at New Row, Kilrea.
Marking their silver anniversary, the tenants and representatives from the local NI Hospice support group which meet at the scheme, presented £10,400 to NI Hospice.
Toberdoney Fold provides independent living accommodation for 26 tenants and has been part of the Kilrea community since 1990 when it opened its doors as a newly built facility. Back then it was officially opened by local man and TV personality Gordon Burns, who hosted the Krypton Factor.
Folds Director of Housing, Eileen Patterson said, ''We are delighted that Toberdoney Fold has reached its 25 year milestone. It is very much part of the community of Kilrea and provides high quality, safe and affordable housing for local older people. The people who live in Toberdoney Fold are able to retain their independence and continue to live close to their family and friends, which is what all of us would wish for as we grow older. It is great that staff and tenants are marking this occasion with this big celebration and it is lovely to see them sharing memories about people and events that have shaped life in Kilrea.
Three tenants, Mrs Kathleen Young, Miss Sadie Dempsey and Miss Eileen Hemphill have been living at Toberdoney since it opened 25 years ago. Miss Hemphill, who celebrates her 83rd birthday this month said, ''I am from Kilrea and have been lucky enough to live here all my life. I was one of the first people to move in, back in July 1990, and I remember I was so delighted that I got a place. Toberdoney Fold is my home - it has been the best move I made, I feel safe and can come and go as I please. Sheila is the best coordinator, always looking out for us.
Sheila Donnelly, Scheme Coordinator at Toberdoney, for the past 14 years said, We have been very lucky at Toberdoney Fold in that we have enjoyed the support of the local community since our doors opened. We have established great links over the years with numerous organisations including the Credit Union and St Vincent de Paul.
She added, ''The tenants, staff and people from around Portglenone, Garvagh and Kilrea have formed a Support Group for Northern Ireland Hospice which we host here at the scheme. We are thrilled that, as part of our 25th anniversary celebrations we are able to make this presentation to NI Hospice for £10,400. Since we started the Group five years ago we have raised over £60,000 and we couldn''t have done this without the support of family and friends. The local people of Kilrea, Portglenone and Garvagh have all supported us and have come to our cake sales, baked for us, donated items and supported all kinds of events, from tea dances to nights at the races and coffee mornings. We are truly thankful and we are glad so many will be joining us to help us celebrate our special anniversary.
