Discretionary Payments to Furnish your Home

Welfare Advice

Case Study 3

Background

A Radius tenant required essential household items such as a fridge, cooker, bed, mattress, but could not afford them.

He received Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), and Housing Benefit. He tried to make an application for discretionary support over the phone but was unable to proceed with the application due to his illness.

Radius Welfare Advice Officers assisted him to make his application over the phone.

Outcome

He was awarded the grant to assist him in furnishing his home.

As this was a grant he does not need to repay this money and the furniture provided has helped him sustain his tenancy.
